Coaching Staff

Chris Derks
Chris Derks serves as a volunteer coach for Alexandria Masters with a specialty in open water and distance swimming. He is a former world record holder and current American record holder in the 1500, and has conquered the English Channel. Chris served as US National Open Water Team coach (1997 & 1999), as well as coached age-group, college, and masters-level group across the country.


Barb Gundred
Barb has been coaching since the age of 19. Her most recent experience has been with United States Masters Swimming. Barb started a team in Bellingham, Washington, in 1986 and coached there until 2005. From 2005 to 2007, Barb coached an age group team in Peterborough UK ranging in ages from nine to 18. In the fall of 2016, Barb became an assistant coach at T.C. Williams High School. Barb still swims and currently holds 131 Individual USMS Top 10 times. Barb holds Level 3 Masters and age group certification and is working on level 4 certification.


Stephanie Gauzens
Stephanie has been swimming since she was five and started coaching when she was in high school. She hails from Florida and hates indoor pools - swimming backstroke in the rain is fun! She holds two USMS All-American relay honors and is currently an officer of the Potomac Valley LMSC board.


Cynthia Plasschaert
Cynthia is a Level 2 US Masters Swimming Coach and has been teaching swim lessons including age group teams, Adaptive swimming, and water aerobics for over 15 years. She currently works at SwimBox, where she teaches private and semi-private swim lessons to children and adults. As a swimmer, Cynthia swam at the Savannah College of Art and Design as a distance swimmer.


Tim Taylor
Tim holds Level 2 ASCA and Level 3 USMS swim coach certifications and has been coaching all ages since 2008. He has coached for both the Potomac Marlins and Nation's Capital in the local area and has coached Alexandria Masters since 2012. As a swimmer, Tim is a short and mid-distance butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, and IM specialist, and has a number of USMS National Top 10 times and Alexandria Masters team records under his belt.
